Seven
centuries ago, Thiers sarted to make knife manufacturing one
of their specialities and the town is still famous for producing
anything that cuts.
Seven years ago, a cutlery design association "Association
Thiemoise pour la Création Coutelière " was
born thanks to its seven partners : the State, the town of Thiers,
the Metal Industry Employer's Syndicate, the National Artisan
Cutlery Employer's Syndicate, the Thiers Chamber of Commerce
and Industry, the Puy-de-dôme Guild Chamber and the Livradois-Forez
Regional Natural Park.
The association is motivated by one aim, one challenge : for
Thiers know-how to meet the most contemporary design, to encourage
those who, in the very near future, will be the people involved
in the creation, to assist them in their early projects. |

This
is the purpose of the European Cutlery Design Market which
was first held in
1994 and which will held for the fifth
time in 2005-2006.
The
principe is simple : on a sector-based cutlery theme, candidates
from all over the European union presents projects that are
submitted to a first selection of five laureates : their projects
are then produced in the form of functional prototypes before
the jury decides on the Grand Prix prize winners. Finally
all the candidate projects are presented to the profession
and contacts between designers and professionnals are encouraged
and organised.
